Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities for a Benefit Assessment Officer include:
- evaluating information and evidence of household details relating to benefit claims, carrying out detailed assessments of capital, income or other resources relevant to benefits entitlement
- verifying and validating claim details, making the necessary calculations to determine entitlement, taking entitlement decisions and notifying customers accordingly
- seeking to ensure that eligibility and entitlement is accurately assessed in accordance with law and policy guidelines, recording information in IT systems and other records and maintaining the caseload database
- implementing changes of circumstances, adjusting benefit entitlement accordingly, identifying any over-paid or over-claimed benefits and undertaking the review of claims in payment
- calculating overpayments of benefit, issuing appropriate notices and implementing recovery
- maintaining an awareness of current benefits policy and guidance both from Government (DWP) and from internal sources
Skills and Qualifications
Successful Benefit Assessment Officers will have the following skills and experience:
- Academy / I-World / Pericles / IBS systems experience
- experience of working within a benefits section or in a similar environment dealing with income-related assessments
- a good working knowledge of benefits law and procedures
- experience of customer/public contact requiring good communication skills
- experience of accurately maintaining and interpreting personal and financial data
Salary Details
- typical salaries range from £18.00 to £27.00 per hour on temporary contracts
- salary varies dependant on location and volume of work
