About Southwark
Together with the City of London, Southwark is the oldest area of London stretching back to Roman times. Rich in both history and literature, Southwark is also modern and fast paced. It is arguably one of the most diverse, tolerant and successful areas in the Capital. The people who live here play a huge role in making London one of the most exciting and cosmopolitan places in the world.
Southwark is made up of eight very distinctive urban neighbourhoods that extend along the river Thames and down into South East London. They encompass some of London’s top attractions, creative hotspots, scenic villages and acclaimed green spaces.

Living in Southwark
Southwark is home to world famous attractions such as the Tate Modern, Borough Market, Tower Bridge and the Old Vic theatre. We are also an area of major regeneration. Our programme is not only changing the face of the borough, it is also changing how people live, work and socialise within it.
Southwark’s central location provides excellent transport links. We are served by three London underground lines and a major rail terminal at London Bridge. There is an extensive bus network and easy access to major roads.
We have a population of over 250,000, and are the largest housing landlord in London. Sixty-three Councillors lead Southwark, which is organised into eight multi-service departments. The Council increasingly works in partnership with other public sector organisations and the private sector. We are committed to excellence and aim to provide services effectively and efficiently to the local community and all of our visitors.
Southwark Council is now undergoing one of the most ambitious physical regeneration programmes of any authority in the country, together with a wide range of initiatives aimed at improving educational standards, reducing crime and improving health, housing and the environment. Our aim is for everyone, particularly children and young people growing up in Southwark, to thrive. Find out more about how we are working towards this in Southwark 2016, our Sustainable Community Strategy.

Working for Southwark Council
Working for an organisation is not only about monetary rewards. This is why Southwark offers a host of non-cash incentives to make working for this Council a more rewarding and enriching experience. We offer comprehensive Learning & Development opportunities to all staff; some of which are offered from remote access points. This means you can choose to learn from your desk or at a training centre.
We also encourage social activities & promote healthy lifestyles by hosting staff barbecues, health fairs, seasonal events and sports events. On occasion we offer discounts for some theatre tickets, theme parks, and the like.
Southwark recognises that people work best when they have a satisfactory balance between their paid work and the remainder of their lives as individuals, carers and members of the community. This is why we offer work life balance initiatives such as: Flexi Time, Term Time Working, Job Sharing, Compressed Working Week, Day Release for studying, Time off for family emergencies, Employment Breaks, Home Working – occasional / permanent, and Special Leave. There are also other interesting schemes and activities offered departmentally.
