Senior Consultant Alex Whisker of The Synergy Group’s Housing team in Leeds recently ran a successful employment skills day for the service users of York Housing Association and YMCA Malton. The well-attended sessions covered the following topics:
- CV Writing
- Application Forms
- Interviews
- Assessment Centres
- Career Advice
Glenn Plews of York Housing Association had the following to say about the event:
We provide a floating support service in the Ryedale area, which aims to prevent homelessness and deal with it. Many of our clients are young people aged under 25 years of age. Often they have, and have had disrupted lifestyles and find it especially difficult to focus their energy and skills into gaining and retaining employment. Lack of confidence and morale is also a key barrier.
The session which Alex facilitated for us, was held at the YMCA at Malton, and it was structured to meet some of these issues. Clients were surveyed beforehand and they identified areas which they wanted to concentrate on. They wanted help with preparing their CV’s; tips on how to prepare for interviews and conduct themselves in them. They also wanted to know how to approach their first days at work.
The session went really well and Alex’s advice was keenly heard. We did not know how long concentration spans would last, but in the event we had full attention for 3 hours , which was better than I had anticipated.
Alex is holding similar events for another 2 housing associations in the North East in the near future so watch this space!
