Jobseekers Beware!
We look into the potential pitfalls of only using the major job boards when conducting your search for a new career.
With unemployment in Britain at its highest rate since 1997 and the number of claimants rising faster than since 1992, the current economic climate is affecting all markets worldwide and recruitment is no exception. As more and more redundancies occur, we are noticing a record number of applications for our jobs posted on generalist job boards. On one hand, this is good news for us, as our vacancies are attracting a huge response and this gives us a wider pool of candidates from which to chose. Conversely, this is also proving troublesome for a number of our recruiters, as they are swamped with applications from unsuitable candidates. They then have to spend a great deal of time sorting through a plethora of CVs and responding to all the unsuitable applicants.
There are two solutions to this problem. Firstly, candidates could use specialist job sites. The adverts on these sites generally attract lower levels of response but as a candidate this can be a good thing – your CV doesn’t get caught in the herd with all the other responses as on a generalist site and it carries slightly more gravitas with the recruiter.

A second and more effective solution is to register with a recruitment agency that specialises in your particular industry. This way your application is sure to get through to the recruiter and they can then assess your CV against the roles they currently have available. An easy way to do this is by submitting your CV through the agency’s website, as you can on the Synergy site by clicking here. Subscribing to email alerts and RSS feeds is another good way to find out about new vacancies quickly and helps you get your CV in front of the recruiter first. Good luck in your job search!
